Ultralight Backpacking - Testing Skills

April 21st, 2009
On Lake Michigan, at the end of the Stonington Peninsula, there's a stretch of empty beach. Part of the Hiawatha National Forest, it's framed on either side by private property, with no easy access. To walk on the beach, however, is legal. Past the last cabin, the public land starts, and goes for six or seven miles. This is where I would test my ultralight backpacking skills and gear. I hiked a few miles the first day and explored the woods, where I ate wild blueberries for an hour. Then I set ...

Attract Deer Using Food Plots - It's Not Rocket Science!

April 19th, 2009
Planting food plots is a perfectly legal way to feed and provide benefits to the deer. You can not however, use corn or seeds to lure a deer in order to shoot it, the vast majority of states adhere to this law. The food plots provide the deer with a sure place to get food, and so they will be better nourished and as a result grow bigger and healthier. Healthy deer will in turn produce more deer in that area which is especially beneficial during the winter months. Clover is a delicacy for deer! ...

Deer Velvet Boost to Strength and Recovery

April 19th, 2009
The New Zealand Game Industry Board and AgResearch are working hard to prove scientifically - that New Zealand deer velvet may have a positive effect on athletic performance. Hunting September Roe

April 19th, 2009
Well, we've all been bored and on the verge of suicide over the long hot summer months. Since March I have done nothing with the dog, save for a little mooching...But...Septembers here to save your sanity...because September is...Deer time! I suppose I am pretty fortunate to have some great mates that help me out. If they see anything of interest whilst they are driving around they will be on the mobile straight away. On a few occasions each year these "tip-offs have produced a good run and ...

Where Are The Whitetail Deer?

April 19th, 2009
Where Did The Deer Go?, Early Season Thoughts..You have worked all spring and summer keeping your feeders filled, building new deer stands or fixing old ones, planting food plots and planning hunting strategies for your first fall hunt. Each time you checked your feeders, food plots or game trails, you were encouraged by new deer sign, fresh tracks, rubs, scrapes and other signs that deer continue to use the area. But, now that archery or early gun season opening day are here, you're not seeing ...

Deer Hunting Is A Real Challenge

April 18th, 2009
While their populations are large, deer are still one of the most alternately frustrating and exhilarating game animals to hunt. One thing that makes this animal so difficult to get is twofold. Their sense of smell is so keen and their ability to communicate within the herd rapidly to warn them that danger is near, is razor sharp. It's easy to tell when you've been sniffed out in the literal sense, as they will raise their heads and point their noses in your direction. Whitetail deer will ...

Beware The Summer BBQ!

April 18th, 2009
Now that it's summer, it's almost impossible to avoid the ever-popular summer BBQ. Some of our favorite meals are cooked over charcoal, but we still need to be aware that many of the traditional 'summer' foods are packed with fat and calories! Isn't it ironic that some of the 'fattest' foods make their debut in the summer when we're all trying to fit into that bathing suit? So which traditional summer foods will break the belt? HOT DOGS. Although they're small, the typical hot dog ...
